[comp.os.vms] DECnet area numbering

  I sent this out a coupla weeks ago, and got nothing - nada. But then, I 
never saw it in distribution, either, so... heerre goes again.

  We are about to connect our existing DECnet network to a new cross-country
network. Pursuant to this, I am trying to pursuade to people running the new
network to choose an area number _other_ than the default of 1.

  In my view, it is becoming increasingly more likely that new network
connections will be to existing networks such as ours, rather than to
individual (non-networked) systems. As such, I would think that such
interconnections would be greatly facilitated by lack of area numbering
coinflicts. 

  So... to the question: how many of you people out there are using area 
numbers _other_ than the above-mentiond default of 1?

  I suppose it wouldn't hurt to ask if anyone thinks I'm barking up an empty 
tree, for that matter. Hmmm?  I volunteer to provide the results of this 
question to the network at large.

HEPnet/SPAN (High Energy Physics net/Space Physics Analysis Network), which
consists of several thousand machines (last I heard it was the world's second-
largest DECnet) currently uses areas: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 13, 17, 18,
20, 22, 24, 25, 27, 28, 33, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 57, and 60.

Sorry to trouble the list with this, but our mailer ralfed on the

Ken:

THENet (Texas Higher Education NETwork - formerly TEXNet) is a network
of 496 nodes, currently using Areas 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,17,19,20,
21,22,23,25,26,37,38,39, and 40.  The only thing in area 1 is a 'mock'
node 1.1 which holds the current version of the THENet configuration
file used.
