At our site, on our Administration MicroVAX-II (currently at 4.4 due to some 3rd-party software which isn't up to coping with 4.5 yet), we define group logical name tables on startup by submitting a batch job under the ownership of some member in the required group. The command file it uses simply defines whatever logical names are needed since, thanks to the existence of the batch process, the table has been created. It only takes about 5 seconds of CPU, and has the advantage that the rest of system startup can go on in parallel. Of course, you do have to set up your batch queues and start the queue manager *before* submitting these jobs, but we do this fairly early on since we use this technique for a number of layered-product startups, in particular ALLIN1. Hope this gives you some ideas. Ruth Milner Systems Manager University of Toronto Physics
