Notice the device name is "MU"; this is probably a TU81-Plus tape driver (guess). If so, then this is a known problem which has been mentioned before on Info-VAX. It only affects TU81+ tape drives. I believe that the reason BACKUP needs PHY_IO for the TU81+ is to enable the cache on the TU81+. We use both TK50s and a TS11-lookalike under VMS V4.6 with no problems. = Frank J.
