[urp] As others have stated, DEC uses quite a few different device names, and I haven't seen a recent 'official' list of reserved names (perhaps they are ALL officially reserved?), but I named my terminal device PX and the control device PY. This has a certain elegance to it, since many terminals are called TX, and this _is_ a "P"seudo TX after all :-). And in the twisted paths of my brain, it makes lots of sense to call the controlling device for a PX a PY, so voila! I haven't run into conflicts (yet). In the back of one of those wonderful orange binders (?SYSGEN?), there is a list of DEC device names and the devices associated with them. I did not find PX or PY there, so I was reassured. Sigh...I can;t find the reference btu DEC has reserved a single letter for customer device drivers....I recall vaguely that it was Q but it migh be Z. The Guide for DEVICE Drivers (or modular command procs or VMSINStallables) ought to say. I will check when I have a moment if no one beats me to it.
