I would like to use METAFONT on VMS. Unfortunately it is not available to users at our site. I cannot afford to pay even the modest $200 distribution fee for the TeX distribution tape so I am asking whether there is anyone on the network who can send me a copy of the programs needed to run METAFONT on VMS. The material is, as far as I know, in the public domain and is copyrighted to prevent unauthorized modification of the source. So it ought to be ok for you to send it to me. Thanks. Sincerely, Allan Adler ADLER1@BRANDEIS.BITNET

Metafont is freely available - the code is technically copyrighted by Don Knuth, but he allows anyone to copy it as long as they don't change it without changing the name, or some such restriction. The biggest problem - the reason most people get the tape distribution - is that it is too large to move around the net on a regular basis. I suggest you ask your question again in TeXhax; I've enclosed a blurb from a recent issue telling you how to subscribe. There may very well be a BITNET Listserver you could get Metafont from. -- Jerry The TeXhax blurb: %%% %%% subscriptions, address changes to: texhax-request@score.stanford.edu %%% please send a valid arpanet address!! %%% %%% submissions to: texhax@score.stanford.edu %%% %%% BITNET redistribution: TEX-L@TAMVM1.BITNET (list server) %%% %%%\bye %%%
