[comp.os.vms] Wanted -- VMS BACKUP reader for UNIX systems

levy@ttrdc.UUCP (Daniel R. Levy) (01/16/88)

Ho, hackers!

I'm interested in finding a UNIX program which can read VMS BACKUP tapes
(that is, the files archived therein). I already have a copy of a UNIX
program which can read Files-11 tapes, but this doesn't gain me anything
with VMS BACKUP tapes except to be able to read in the whole BACKUP
saveset file. (It doesn't help me to extract the files from a BACKUP
saveset.) Also, it can't deal with multi-volume backups.

Yes, yes, I know about the VMS TAR programs. I'm not concerned about how to
get data from VMS to UNIX systems. What I am concerned about is mountains
of old VMS backups, which may possibly need to have data retrieved from them
even after we have kissed our VMS systems good-bye.

Any ideas? (I'm not picky as to the kind of hardware or version of UNIX
system this would run on, as I am willing to modify the program as needed.)
Thanks in advance....

Sorry dan, I can't help you with your request, but I have a related request,
sort of the exact opposite of yours:

Does anyone out there know where I can find a version of ar(1) that will
run under VMess? I bounce this request off of the decus newsgroup a month
or so ago with no success.

Thanks for any help...

//SYSIN DD *
There was a good VMSBACKUP reader posted to comp.sources.misc not too long
ago -- check at uunet or in the DECUS archives for Unix systems.

I'll look around -- I think we have a copy somewhere.

    This brings back memories of CS231 class (IBM Assembly Language Program-
ming, part II) here at BSU... One night after a long programming session on
the IBM system, I woke up from a deep sleep about 4AM and yelled out "SYSIN
DD asterisk!" Don't know WHAT I must have been dreaming about...

Indeed. Ah, memories. For a long time my prompt on ol' zinfandel was

//STEP.123 EXEC PGM=

(where the "123" was the current csh event number.) This was only privately
amusing, until one day an "old" IBM hacker (turned toward Unix and the light
side of the Force) came by my office for something and saw my prompt.

"What the HELL are you running there?!?!" he asked. "4.1BSD" I said.
Took him nearly a full minute to figure it out... hee hee.
