We have the following minor problem with KERMIT-32 operating under VAX/VMS 4.1: For the present we have one VAX operating under VMS 4.1 and another under VMS 3.7 and we are using Kermit to transmit files between the two systems. The Kermit operating under VMS 3.7 in VAX-1 communicates perfectly with the Kermit operating under VMS 4.1 in VAX-2. However, when VAX-2 initi- ates the connection it reports error messages. For example: From VAX-2 (4.1) we command Kermit in VAX-1 (3.7) to act as SERVER, then command GET filename. The transfer is carried out cor- rectly and the report [OK] is displayed. Next the following message: %KERMIT32-F-BADPARAM, bad parameter value We then command FINISH, and the same report is displayed. We CONNECT to VAX-1 and receive the following partial message: iguous verb [sic] \L\ E%KERMIT32-F-BADPARAM, bad parameter valueQ [sic] We then logout of VAX-1 and return to Kermit in VAX-2. Following the message [SYS$NODEReturning to VAX/VMS KERMIT-32] the "BADPARAM" message is displayed twice, and then the "KERMIT-32>" prompt reappears. The problem is not serious, since the file transfer itself and the behavior of the Kermit on VAX-1 under VMS 3.7 is perfect. However, the frequent appearance of the BADPARAM message is annoying to the experienced user and disconcerting to the novice. Has anyone else observed this behavior? Does anyone have a fix? T. W. I had a telephone call from Bernie Eiben of DEC on Thursday, 2 May. He said that there was an update to Kermit for VMS v. 4.0 which took care of our problem and some others; that the v. 3.7 Kermit should NOT be used under 4.0 because it can "destroy the terminal block"-- a problem which we had not recognized. He said that we can download the revised version of KERMIT for VMS 4.0 from the TOPS-20 machine at Marlboro(?) by dialling 617-467-7437, using login "LOG LCG.KERMIT KERMIT" (where the second KERMIT is p/w and is not echoed). Type KNEWS and read six or eight messages, one of which tells what you need to get and run Kermit. [He requests use of 1200 bps modem, if available.] We downloaded VMSMIT.HEX and also VMSDEH.MAR. The VMSMIT is a "hexified" version, and VMSDEH.MAR is a MACRO version of a "dehexifier". We assembled and linked VMSDEH, then RUN VMSDEH on VMSMIT.HEX to produce KERMIT.EXE. The revised version is now up and running under VMS 4.1. Eiben also suggests downloading the HELP files. The new Kermit runs on both VMS 3.7 and VMS 4.1. It also clears up a couple of latent problems which affected the former version, running under 3.7. Eiben's telephone number is (617) 467-4431. He was very gracious and helpful about the problem. T.
