What if anything are you using as a "measure" of response time? We are considering adding a measurement routine to a detached miscellaneous task controller that we have developed here. This process does things like reset un-allocated asynchronous ports, check for changes in cluster configuration so as to modify the console OPCOM statuses, watching for disks coming and going, etc.... The program is designed so that all of this activity is controlled by timers and AST's so that most of the time it is idle. We are considering developing a set of commands that more or less accurately reflects the average interactive user's perception of response time. Something like a SHOW MEMORY command and other things like it. We realize that it is very much user community dependent as to what "real" response time is. What if any metric(s) do you use to keep tabs on this? This is definitely over and above general system performance monitoring -- which we do continuously via detached MONITOR processes. Also, if you are into transaction processing and FAST file IO at your site, and would like to talk about it, please contact me. I would like to collect info you have about what the demand is that your applications are putting on you. This is a part of a project of the DECUS VAX SIG Commercial Working Group. Please reply via mail directly to me, if interest is high enough I'll summarize the results, and report to the whole list. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Bob Boyd Usenet: rlb@rtpark.rtp.ge.com GE Microelectronics Ctr.
