Since everyone else is throwing in their two cents, I thought I'd add to the confusion and traffic ;-) This campus is filled with IBM PC's of all different flavors (and a few clones as well) connected to the VAX cluster via fiber optics/Ethernet/DECservers/etc. Generally speaking, I hate IBM stuff (mainframes and PC's both). I've used a variety of machines (Xerox Sigma 7 and the DEC-10 being favorites, and IBM 370 being last on the list). I like the VAX, but the one place it isn't up to snuff is the editors. The wide variety of PC editors proves to me that there are LOTS of good editors out there, as well as a number of lousy ones. After 15 years with various mainframe editors, I've switched to a PC editor called Nota Bene which is wonderful for both the people here who want to write nice ASCII files (programs, etc.) and those who want boldface, underlined, justified, ump-teen pitch document stuff. And it's got a fancy programming language, complete keyboard re-mapping, multiple windows, etc. It writes all it's stuff in a simple ASCII format. (No fancy stuff to "export" to an ASCII file.) I'm still learning TPU but I have yet to see where Nota Bene does not out perform it. As has been said before, choosing editors is a VERY personal activity. I like to think that I'm flexible, since I do continue to learn new editors as they come out, but I'm certain I have my biases like the rest of you out there. As a final note, I'd like to say that if TPU produced LSE, it can't be a complete waste ;-) since I DO find LSE kinda fun and useful. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kevin Cole <Flatline> BITNET: KJCOLE@GALLUA.BITNET Center for Assessment and or Demographic Studies (CADS) CADS_COLE@GALLUA.BITNET Gallaudet Research Institute (GRI) UUCP: ...!psuvax!gallua.bitnet!kjcole Gallaudet University CompuServe: 76167,1406 Washington, D.C. 20002 (202) 651-5575 "Hey Rocky!
