Is there anyone out there who has used the VAX ENCRYPTION product and might offer some comment on how good (bad) it is. Our situation is a VAX 11/750 with a mix of faculty, staff and students all using Email. There has been concern that students might get access to sensitive messages or that a faculty member might see what a student really thinks of her/him. We take all the normal precautions... file protection, ACLs, ect. ... but were wondering if the ENCRYPTION product might afford us more security. Or give us more headaches concerning system performance and users forgetting the keys to their encrypted files. The WordPerfect word processor comes with encryption. This encryption works identically on PC and VAX so you can encrypt the message on the PC and decrypt it on the VAX. Or if you don't want to have to worry about passwords which may be lost/forgotten, WordPerfect's Office product (which does Email and Calendaring/scheduling) will (if desired) automatically encrypt everything in it's centralized mail directories using a system-wide password (which cannot be decrypted using WordPerfect) which is automatically decrypted only when read using the office product by the proper user who was supposed to read it.
