Hi:
What you really should do is tell the professor to Disconnect.
This assumes three things:
1. Disconnect is enabled on your VAX.
2. Watchdog won't kill a disconnected process
3. The system parameter Tty_Timeout is set high enough to
make it worthwhile (15 minutes is the default).
It makes good sense to set your system up this way for several
reasons. The systems people would MUCH prefer someone to
disconnect rather than leave their terminal unattended, especially
if the account is privileged, or in the case of a professor, has
sensitive data (grades, tests, etc). Logoff is too inconvenient,
especially when you may be in the middle of an editing session,
or if the person has to log in many times/day.
ASTs are fun, but not necessary here. There are several easy ways
to effectively disable a Watchdog procedure. For this reason, the
Systems group should do their part to make it easy to leave your
terminal and not lose your process. Sometimes, however, if the
machine is undersized, this isn't practical, since there is a
amount of memory and a limited number of process slots.
Surely, if your System Services group really means the "Services"
part, they can set this up for you, unless they already have.
Lawrence
