[comp.os.vms] KA820 ports 1-3

terry@DEC-VAX-11-750.ARPA (03/15/88)

Hi all,

We have a VAX 8250 and on the back of the cabinet is a plate
which says "KA820". It has four ports, numbered 0-4, and
0 is used as the console port.

Problem: Ports #1-3 do not show up in the configuration
after the system is booted. They say they are
          async comm ports.

Question: Is this normal? Can I somehow configure and use these
          ports?

Secondary question: Is the KA820 what makes an 8200 an 8250?

Thanks in advance....

Terry Robb

P.S. You can send your answer to the net, but please send a
copy directly to me also. Thanks again.

In response to your INFOVAX posting on KA820 serial line units:

To connect the remaining serial line units for use on an 8200/8250/8300/8350 use
the sysgen commands:

        SYSGEN> CONNECT SLU=1
        SYSGEN> CONNECT SLU=2
        SYSGEN> CONNECT SLU=3

After which devices TCA0, TCB0 and TCC0 will appear.

The only difference between a 8200/8300 and 8250/8350 is the CPU module. The
older slower modules are known as T1001 and the newer faster ones are T1001-YA.

This is normal. In order to configure these ports issue the following commands:
        $ RUN SYS$SYSTEM:SYSGEN
        connect slu=1
        connect slu=2
        connect slu=3
After this you have the ports TCA0:, TCB0: and TCC0:. These ports have a
maximum speed of 1200 baud and are very expensive in use (one interrupt per
character I/O).

I thought that the KA820 is the 8200 processor. We have a Vax 8300, which has
two KA820 processors.
