[comp.os.vms] Emulex's new terminal server

wojciech%arc.CDN@ean.ubc.ca (Wojtek Grochowski) (03/22/88)

I was about to write a requisition for another DECserver 200 when I came
across an article in Computing Canada (March 3) titled
"Emulex intros DEC server" which says:

"Emulex Canada Inc. has introduced the Performamce 4000, which it says is the
first Ethernet terminal server to be fully compatible with DEC's Local Area
Transport (LAT) protocol.
According to Emulex, because of the LAT compatibility, the 4000 is the only
third party terminal server that plugs directly into DEC's Ethernet network
without special hardware or software.
It offers twice the performance, four times the line capacity, and more
features than DEC's DECserver 200, for half the cost per line, says Emulex."

I checked with Enhanced Systems in Calgary (Glen Johnson) who gave me the
following info:

1) Avalability - end of May or beginning of June 1988
2) There are 3 versions of the product:
    12 line - $ ???
    16 line - $ 7250
    32 line - $ 10250
3) Throughput high enough to run 32 terminals at 19.2kbaud
4) Local command line editing
5) Parallel printer port.

Does anyone know this product ?
I have to decide one way or another by the end of next week to ensure delivery
by June 1988.

p.s. DECserver 200 costs us $ 5050 (plus H4000, cable and software license).
