Here at ukecc we just recently installed an AT&T 3B20. So as to better communicate with the outside world, we have 6 telephone lines available for dialing in/out. All we need are some decent modems. We plan on purchasing the Basic Networking Utilities software package from AT&T. We would appreciate any and all comments/suggestions/recomendations on good (hopefully cheap) modems. Currently we are using a (borrowed) USR Password which seems to work OK except that it sends out this annoying CONNECT message when it gets a carrier. (It sends it out the serial port, not the phone line) I personally like the Prometheus Promodem 1200, but they cost about $50 more than the Password. What is in use out there in the rest of netland and what is good and what is bad? All comments welcome! Please mail correspondence to... -- Edward C. As long as a request for modem recommendations has been posted, I would like to request that folks include 2400 bps modems in their recommendations. Probably things like o Does it operate at 300/1200/2400 or just 1200/2400? o Reliability over long periods of use; does it drift? o Cost (the $64,000 question) and support? o Does it do line detection? Busy signal, off-hook, and ring detection or just a timeout? o Hayes and/or Crosstalk compatibility (and any other program compatibility)? Most of these would obviously apply to 1200 bps modems, also. I thank any and all who send (or post) information on their suggestions. The July, 1985, edition of "On Communications" (formerly "Computerworld on Communications") has an extensive market survey on 1200 bps modems. Since I just received my copy this morning, I cannot comment on the quality of the report, but the quantity certainly is there. Looks good at first glance. (It has come to my attention that this line is NOT(?) nescessary!) You might want to check this month's issue of BYTE. In it you will an add from Anchor Novation for their new modems. The add is very vague, but it seems to me that these modems are 2400baud and compatible with Hays extended command set. The only difference that I can see is that one is smaller than the other ;-). I have the old Mark XII and am somewhat happy with it. Maybe these guys cleaned up their acts and now have really good modems... -- Jose A.
