First my thanks to Tony Li and Asbed of USC, Ken Adelman of SRI, and Carl from CITHEX for responding to my query. For those of you who care, the following will work for VMS V4.7 systems with non-standard emulations on their system disks for which patches are required of VMB.EXE and DRDRIVER: The version 4.4 patched DRDRIVER *does* work under V4.7. Asbed from USC informs me that the Emulex patches do NOT work on the new V4.6 DRDRIVER, but the older DRDRIVER works just fine. What I did was build VMS 4.6 on an RM05 first. In between phase I and phase II, I rebooted the 4.5 version of VMS and copied the files SYS$SYSTEM: VMB.EXE and DRDRIVER.EXE to the disk containing the system being built, as well as putting an old copy of VMB.EXE onto the console boot floppy. I then re-booted the RM05, and the upgrade progressed normally. I then built 4.7 on top of 4.6, and did an /image backup from the build disk to the target disk when I was all done. The new system was then booted from the Fuji Eagle. I got replies to the effect that a number of sites were running with prior versions of VMB and DRDRIVER and had experienced no side-effects under V4.7. Again, my thanks to all who helped.
