[comp.os.vms] How to add a second hard disk to uVAX/uVMS?

zhu@ogcvax.UUCP (Jianhua Zhu) (03/23/88)

Once again I am having a problem with our uVAX/uVMS system
and in need of help from kind souls of this newsgroup.

Here is the scenario: We wanted to add a second fixed disk (RD53)
to our microVAX-II/microVMS-4.5 system. We got the disk installed,
and it showed up as DUA1 correctly with "$SHOW DEVICES" command.
However, we could not get it mounted. When we tried to initialize it
(with "INITIALIZE"), we got "write check" kind of error message;
when we tried to mount it without first initializing it, there was
"no home block" kind of error message.

I have no idea why this is happening (we do not have "SYSTEM
MANAGER'S MANUAL" here). Could somebody out there who knows an
answer help me out, and tell me what I should do to reconfigure
the system when new devices are added?

Reply by email is preferred since this problem is probably not
of general interest. Thanks a lot in advance.

Assuming that it "ought" to work (ie that the controller and drive are both
working correctly, etc.), one thing that can cause this is if your disk was
formatted on an RQDX2, and you have an RQDX3, or vice versa. Have your field
service person format the disk for you, making VERY sure that s/he hits your
new disk and not your old one, and try again.
