This is a call for participation in the WHITE PAPER process. The DECUS LARGE SYSTEMS SIG, and the VAX Commercial Working Group are looking for people who have an interest in, (and time to write about) the following topics. Please respond to "BERKLEY@WUNET.WUSTL.EDU" or "BERKLEY@WUNET.BITNET"... 1) Standardized date and times under VMS. This topic includes removing the "19" from "1988", Daylight savings time, more keywords for time fields (Yesterday, today, friday, monday, etc). Divorcing the system clock from accounting records. I.E. The system clock time stamps entries, but is not used for computing connect times, etc. 2) DCL PARSING. This topic includes removing the "4 character uniqueness" feature. Converting the parsing to a context free system. (Regular expressions for finite state parsing). Adding inline help, command recognition, etc. 3) Process Scheduling. This topic includes the justification and description of scheduling based on "Class scheduling", non-realtime Runtime guarantee (I.E. IBM style SET FAVOR). Large installations could use class scheduling to service different user bases. Even small sites could benefit from a non-priority mechanism. 4) File utilities. This topic includes programs to perform the highly tricky file system corrections. An example would be a program to modify bits in the file header (carriage control attribute bits?) or set BACKUP dates. If you have some time, ideas and energy, AND will put these to use helping write WHITE PAPERS for submission to DIGITAL, PLEASE contact the above person by EMAIL. You can make the difference between the status quo and an enlightened operating environment.
