A couple of weeks ago, I posted an inquiry about running programs I had written and compiled on a larger vax on a microvax or vaxstation. A number of people replied with helpful information, but the email with my personal thanks to about half of them bounced, so I would like to thank all of them here. Just in case anyone else might ever be interested, I will briefly summarize the responses I got. A number of people replied that the VMS and DCL should be essentially identical as long as the versions are not too different (VMS 3.x and 4.x may be too different, though). Furthermore, the executables should run with no problem as long as they are relatively self-contained. Ordinary system services can still be called, but beware of system shared libraries. Especially beware of potential hardware connection problems. A VAXstation may or may not have a serial port or other means of attaching a (normal) terminal. Also, even if you can connect a different terminal, if speed is critical, you may have to reboot the system to change the terminal port speed. Software transportation may also be a problem (it was for me). A VAXstation is not unlikely to have only a TK50 cartridge tape drive rather than the open-reel standard drives that would normally be found on a larger VAX. Beware of media incompatibilities if you plan to do anything like this. Thanks again to all. -- Paul Neubauer neubauer@bsu-cs.UUCP <backbones>!{iuvax,pur-ee,uunet}!bsu-cs!neubauer
