We have in the past run terminal lines through the steam tunnels here at NRL, but the problem that we have had is that a good lightning storm will take out the line driver chips on both the terminals and the VAX. Consequently, we now use terminal servers over an ethernet, which is much more immune to damage. (I think that the type of wire that had been run was one of those 48 conductor cables (24 twisted pairs) that the phone company uses all over the place. I don't known how well this was shielded.
