We have a client that wishes to transfer data from a MicroVAX II running
VMS to a PDP-11/34 running RSX. The two machines are located about
6 kilometers from each other. We've considered a phone line and some
type of communications software. Does DEC provided DECNET for linking
these two machines together?
I guess what I'm looking for is some suggestions and related experiences
of people who have a configuration to do file transfers between VAXes and
PDPs.
Thanks in advance.

The simplest is to use decnet on both machines. This gives you almost completely transparent access - and set host capability also. However, as with all DEC software, it isn't super cheap. The alternative is to use a serial line from a terminal port on one machine to a terminal port on the other. Then use kermit (public domain) over that line. We have sites here that do both with tremendous success. -ed cetron@cs.utah.edu center for engineering design univ of utah
