[comp.os.vms] Security Patch and PTYDRIVER

UDCSTAFF@UDCVAX.BITNET (04/13/88)

This may save some sites a bit of grief. We recently received the
security patch, checked with TSC to verify that DEC had really sent
it out, and sat down to read the cover letter. What was in the cover
letter seemed to be of prime concern to VWS applications and only a
vague reference to "unauthorized access" galvanized us to install the
patch.

We put it up and found a nasty side affect. The side affect is that
our users now require privileges to use the CMU/Hughes aircraft PTY
driver. We use it for our terminal transaction logger program, "PHOTO"
(from our DEC20 days.) The result is that "PHOTO" is broken when many of
our students and faculty need it the most!

Has anyone wrestled with the PTYDRIVER problem in this patch and have
a fix for it? Or do we have to settle for "SET HOST/LOG"?

set the SYSGEN parameter TTY_PROT to 0. I got this info from the author
of BOSS another user of PTYs.
