[comp.os.vms] Preventing VMSINSTAL from rebooting

KARCHER%MIT.MFENET@NMFECC.ARPA (04/21/88)

There's been some discussion on preventing VMSINSTAL from performing a "forced"
reboot after an update. Here is another easy way someone here has discovered to
prevent VMSINSTAL from rebooting:

Run VMSINSTAL from a spawned job (subprocess).

That will prevent SHUTDOWN from executing should VMSINSTAL invoke it. In fact,
SHUTDOWN will issue a nice message about "SHUTDOWN cannot be run from a
subprocess" and then abort. Using this method worked fine for installing the
recent security update, allowing the reboot to occur at a more convenient time.
