Please send replies to FDBRANDT@GALLUA.BITNET One of my colleagues, Fred Brandt, asked me if I could pray to the powers that be and see if I could get a response: Fred is trying to get some PDP-11 FORTRAN source files off of a set of tapes that noone seems to know anything about. He got the tapes from some site where the original author and the machine are no longer around. After poking around a bit, we found indications that the tapes were written on an RSX system using DSC. Since we don't have an RSX machine to play on, Fred found one site near here but upon trying to recreate the disk from the DSC tapes, all he got were hardware errors. He knows next to nothing about RSX and the folks on site all gave the same reply "Well, I used it a lot back in 19... but I've forgotten everything I knew." There were also indications from these guys that the system hardware was less than reliable. So now he's looking for a site within 100 miles of Washington D.C. with an 11 on which he can retry these tapes. And/or an RSX wizard and/or some program that will get these source files to our VAX. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Please reply to FDBRANDT@GALLUA.BITNET. I'm not within 100 miles of Washington (but I did used to live there :-) ) however, I am an RSX wizard, and my 11/44 still has DSC (I just checked) and I'd be happy to convert the tape (assuming it is still readable....) have Fred contact me at: cetron@cs.utah.edu cetron@utahcca.bitnet -ed
