[comp.os.vms] RD54 disk drive required for VMS

ward@cfa.harvard.EDU (Steve Ward) (05/20/88)

As it turns out, only one line of the KITINSTAL.COM file has to be
commented out to avoid the RD54 test/rejection business.

In spite of being repititous and emphatic in my posting of this
problem (that it is only in standard VMS distributions, not MicroVMS)
I got replies telling me I was nuts, because MicroVMS worked okay.

To the lone sole who pointed out the single line in the standard
VMS distribution, thanks.

Standard VMS does now check for an RD54 (presumably >= RD54) system
disk and when MicroVMS and standard VMS are merged (VMS5.0) this
might affect MicroVMS users radically. You can search through
KITINSTAL.COM and hopefully comment out or change something to
allow use with RD53's or whatever RD disk you are using. If you are
using an RA or RA clone, this will not affect you. It also remains
to be seen whether DEC will carry this over from the standard VMS
distribution to the new merged distribution.

I haven't perused KITINSTAL.COM for the RD54 test because I now
have RD54,s or RA clones in use, so for me it is moot.
