greetings, A number of colleges in Alberta have built a network based on DECnet, and we are on the verge of expanding to connect some sites of the Alberta Research Council and other industrial R&D sites. One problem we have already encountered is the collision of area numbers, and I was wondering whether any one organization in Canada or the US has a good list of area numbers used in the various research networks. I would like to change our numbers only once, instead of everytime we grow again. If there is no such list, I would like to build one with the objective of providing a reference for groups building new networks which are to interconnect with existing DECnets. Since DECnet V and its greater addressing flexibility is two years away (from various comments out of the network), I think it would be a worthwhile effort to try a bit of coordination. From kenw@noah.arc.cdn I have received a paper by Demar@Fnale.bitnet dealing with the management of area numbers, which provides some of the information. It discusses the SPAN/HEPnet numbering scheme and makes a number of recommendations that make the best of what we have. If there are other papers, references please let me know. I will make the results available to the network. This message was mailed to: INFO-VAX@kl.sri.com NNDIR-L@canada01.bitnet NRCNET-L@ualtavm.bitnet if there are other lists that should be contacted, please either forward the message, or let me know what they are. thanks rom Rom Kieffer (403)-220-6210 Manager, datacommunications Academic Computing Services The University of Calgary Calgary, Alberta CANADA T2N 1N4 Kieffer%ucnet.unca.adhocnet.ca@uncaedu.bitnet
