<VERY roughly>
         Before the sea and the lands and the heavens which cover all
         there was one appearance of nature in the universe,
         which is called Chaos

Someone asks what means:

        ante mare et terras et quod tegit omnia caelum unus erat toto
        naturae vultus in orbe, quem dixere Chaos

           - Ovid, *Metamorphoses*

From a translation I did a couple of years ago:

	Before the seas, skies, and surfaces which gird the
	world were created, everything looked the same; there
	was only one view of our earth, called Chaos.

That's not literal, but a literal translation doesn't do much
for you.
