Someone asks what means:
ante mare et terras et quod tegit omnia caelum unus erat toto
naturae vultus in orbe, quem dixere Chaos
- Ovid, *Metamorphoses*
From a translation I did a couple of years ago:
Before the seas, skies, and surfaces which gird the
world were created, everything looked the same; there
was only one view of our earth, called Chaos.
That's not literal, but a literal translation doesn't do much
for you.
