[comp.os.vms] DECnet addresses - Canada only, sorry

Rom Kieffer (kieffer%Ucnet.UNCA.AdhocNet.CA, at the U of C) and I have been
discussing DECnet interconnection. We are both preparing to move out of area
one. The question is: to what other area number?

If you're running a Canadian DECnet network in an area _other_ than one (1),
could you please send me/us the area number you're using? It'll go no further
without your permission.

And if you send any others you know about, it would be much appreciated.

It appears worthwhile that there be some sort of area number registry,
simply so that people can avoid area numbers already in heavy use. Obviously
there will be people who will be reluctant to have their area number widely
known. A registry like this need not disclose that information; it need only
suggest an appropriate number to people who need one. Does such a registry
exist? If not, it shouldn't take much work; I'd do it myself.

The SPAN area for Canadian nodes is 18. Although we are not on SPAN, we
are connected to York, which is; we use area 60 for all U. of T. nodes.

Good luck finding an unused area number, though with V5 DECnet I think
they can go higher than the current 63.
