[comp.os.vms] mild flame: Kludges vs. RTFM re: mail counts

SEYMOUR@phast.phys.washington.EDU (06/04/88)

I agree: RTFM when they arrive, and again when problems arise.

In this case, however, it's RT exceedingly fine print M.

[For anyone who hasn't yet found the paragraph in the MAIL manual
about the MAIL count, it's on page MAIL-15, second paragraph from the top.
(Volume 1B of full vms version 4.x doc. set, "general user" MAIL manual).
Yes, it's less than blatant. No, it's not in HELP.]

If you managed to solve the problem by any other means, good.

You probably HAD read the manual when it came out 2 years ago.
You probably were having Users crawling down your back while
you were referencing it now. You'd looked in the Index, and under
all the headings a sane person might think of. You probably even
skimmed the "System Management and MAIL" section it's in, but
missed it between "default settings of /system/exec flags" and
"RMS logical translation of node names". So don't feel bad.

Then you managed to cure the problem by creating and copying .MAI
files (or whatever). You achieved your immediate goal, increased
your toolkit for dealing with VMS, and faced the next problem.
