Not too long ago I had the same problem with a modem connection. It was wired correctly, but still insisted on not hanging up cleanly and I got the same responses: INVALID LOGIN. I spent alot of time trying to solve it, at the solution was simple (hindsite is always 20/20). The MODEM defaulted to a VERBOSE mode and when i lost the carrier it told the VAX "NO CARRIER". The VAX of course then said, ok "NO CARRIER" please enter your password and the dialogue continued. Once I turned off the verbose mode, problem solved. This may not be related, but good to know.
