[comp.os.vms] DEC's scriptprinter with Apple LW?

robert@eva.uu.se (Robert Olsson datoravd, EMC tfn 018-172581) (06/09/88)

Has anyone used the scriptprinter software with any other printers
	than the LN03R?

We got an Apple LWIInt and are trying to use it with
DEC's scriptprinter software (v1.0) on our VAX 8530 via a
	DECserver200 LAT port.
However, we have encountered a slight problem : the first and only
thing we get out from the symbiont is two control-A's
which the LW protests against, and then nothing more happens !
This behaviour occurs both under VMS v4.6 and v4.7.

We have an LN03R ScriptPrinter, and the ScriptPrinter software. I
tried the same thing and got the same results. I called DEC support
and the said that the SP software does not work with LAT attached
printers, only hardwired lines. They said it may work under 4.7, but
I see it does not.

If you choose to hardwire the printer, don't expect any accounting
information either. Every accounting record says 1 page is printed.
It would be very easy to use the 'pagecount' operator of the LN03R to
get the printer to tell the symbiont the number of pages printed at
the beginning of the job and the end of the job, but DEC doesn't do
that.

We connect some of our PostScript printers using LAT ports with the
LAT symbiont LATSYM. It works well, but has no bells & whistles like
the SP software. Also, LATSYM is a one way symbiont, it doesn't deal
with printers that talk back. We also talk to the same printer from
our Ultrix v2.2 machine. They both share the printer nicely.

Full feature print symbionts that use LAT do exist. We have software
from Kellerman and Smith that carries on a two-way, protocolled
conversation with our Imagen UltraScript printers. It works very
well. I don't really understand why DEC can't do this.

Good luck,
ted
