My 1200-baud Hayes and home phone line sometimes hiccup lots of "}i"s onto the screen. Does anybody know what is going on?

The most common error characters on a 212A-type modem running at 1200 bits/second are: ``}'' which is 01111101 binary ``~'' which is 01111110 binary <DEL> which is 01111111 binary These characters are common due to the long string of binary 1's caused by a dibit phase shift error resulting from line noise. Often, you will also see two error characters in a row, with one of them most likely being one of the above three. Better quality modems (like AT&T, Rixon, Vadic, etc.) tend to be more noise immune than Hayes, based upon my experience. +++ Larry Lippman @ Recognition Research Corp., Clarence, New York +++ +++ UUCP {decvax, dual, rocksanne, rocksvax, watmath}!sunybcs!kitty!larry +++ +++ VOICE 716/741-9185 {rice,shell}!baylor!/ +++ +++ FAX 716/741-9635 {AT&T 3510D} syr!buf!/ +++ +++ TELEX 69-71461 ansbak: ELGECOMCLR {via WUI} ihnp4!/ +++ +++ +++ +++ "Have you hugged your cat today?" +++
