I just unpacked my VMS 5.0 documentation set. So far I like the idea of dividing the documentation into subsets. What I don't appreciate is that unique volume numbers are not used. In 4.x I could tell a user "go look at page 45 in volume 10C" and there'd be no ambiguity in which volume I'm talking about. Now I'll have to say "go look at page 45 in volume 4 in the User documentation subset". I can imagine the confusion this can cause, especially for users who don't know anything about how the documentation is organized. Other than that, I hope DEC makes it an official company policy that documentation for every new major release (x.0) will appear in binders of a color differerent than the previous release. DEC sure did the right thing with 5.0. I've got both 4.x and 5.0 documentation right next to each other and, unless I go colorblind, I'll always be able to instantly tell the two apart.
