A UNIX compatible compress is available on any of the recent VAX SIG tapes. It is called LZW for Lempel-Zwi(Sp?) compression. I have successfully used it to compress all types of VMS files. It preserves all the VMS file attributes by default but can also make files for export to a Unix system. The VAX SIG tapes have quite a few items compressed with this method.
