$BARRON@OCVAXA (Barron Hulver x8290) (07/16/88)
We have been using dollar signs as the first character in a username since we installed our first VAX/VMS system (1983). The only problem I have ever encountered is with mailers. I don't know all the details, but it seems some UNIX mailers like to chomp on dollar signs and turn them into something else. My impression is that mail is still delivered properly, but the address the return address (From:) the user sees is obliterated. Again, I am vague on details, but I know this has happened to me. Therefore I have switched my username from $BARRON @ OBERLIN.BITNET to PHULVER @ OBERLIN.BITNET ..Barron Hulver (216) 775-8290 e-mail postmaster & technical support analyst Houck Computing Center Oberlin College, Oberlin, OH 44074 phulver @ oberlin (bitnet) phulver @ oberlin.interbit (arpanet or csnet) ocvaxa::phulver (ccnet) (you can also send mail to -> postmaster/postmast/postmstr)
