[comp.os.vms] Cluster-wide tape drives

RMALOUF@CCMAIL.SUNYSB.EDU (Rob Malouf) (06/24/88)

Hello,

Is there any way to make a non-HSC tape drive available to an entire
cluster? We have a TU81+ tape drive on our VAX 8530, and we would like people
to be able to access the tape drives from the workstations we have LAVCed to
it. Our disk drives are served to the cluster using MSCP, and work perfectly.
The tape drive shows up on the 8530 as a clusterish device (i.e., a device name
of SBMS01$MUA0:, where SBMS01 is the node name of our 8530), but doesn't show
up on any of the other nodes at all. According to SHOW DEVICE/FULL, the tape
drive is "available to cluster", but I can't seem to get at it. This isn't a
major problem, since users can always SET HOST into the 8530 from the
workstations, but would prefer not to have to do that. I have been studying
the manuals, but I can't seem to find any mention of cluster-wide non-HSC
tape drives. What have I missed? Thanks in advance.

You need the "downgrade kit" (which we had to have our DEC hardware person
install) which converts a TU81+ into a TA81 which hooks to the HSC.

No. There have been rumors from time to time that Digital is working on
a TMSCP Server to make local tape drives available cluster-wide like the
current MSCP server handles disk drives. However, Digital has never
committed to this and I've not heard the rumor lately.

You haven't missed anything; it can't be done. I have seen all sorts of
wierd and wonderful DCL procedures that attempt to access tape drives
using DECnet, but they all have problems of one sort or another. You
will have to wait for V5.?? (not V5.0) for DEC to put support for
tape devices in the MSCP server.

Sorry but I have just taken a VAXCluster System Manager class and there is no
way to serve a local tape subsystem to the cluster. The only way to access
your tape subsystem on your 8530, is to login to the 8530. According to
the instructor, there are efforts to get this problem fixed. I am not
holding my breath. The class is for VAX/VMS 5.0 clusters.

These thoughts are my own.
