There's a VMS backup reader that was somewhere in mod.sources. I added a copy to the VMS Backup version of the spring '86 UNISIG DECUS tape. It also appeared on the Spring 1987 RSX SIG tape (available in either BRU or VMS Backup format) in the [312,315] directory. I have no idea how good it is, but at least it's available. I presume that you can find some way to get a (relatively short) file over. BTW there's LOTS of interesting software on the S87 RSX tape... well worth examining by anyone, since most will run with trivial or no mods on VMS in native mode... Barry Suskind recently sent me a mod of the VMS Backup reader. It seems the original doesn't know how to handle the xor blocks in VMS Backup. He fixed it so it will and has given permission for it to be on the fall '88 VAX SIG tapes. The full specs of vms backup format are in the VMS docset in version 3 VMS. That description doesn't exist in the newer docset, but the old description is complete and accurate. BTW, Barry's version doesn't USE the XOR blocks; just allows the reader to ignore them. It appears the original reader (from what Barry tells me) was designed for tapes written with /group=0 and possibly for tapes written with /interchange also.
