[comp.os.vms] Documentation for TECO?

fritz@unocss.UUCP (Tim Russell) (07/27/88)

Hi all,

Where can I get documentation on the version of TECO that comes
with VMS 5.0? There is a minimal help library inside, but it only
talks about the line mode commands.. I tried to do TECO /VTEDIT,
and it said the VTEDIT macros couldn't be loaded - is there something
else that needs to be done?

I've never used TECO before at all, but I've heard people say it's
nice (wasn't it what the original Emacs was written in?), and I'd like
to give it a try...

    Thanks for any help!

The documentation is (still) the classic "PDP-11 TECO User's Guide", Order
Number DEC-11-UTECA-B-D. (There may be a slighly more recent version, but
that's the only one I have around.)

This document MAY have been included in the VMS V5 documentation set; I'm not
sure. The set may also include, as release notes or something like that, a
summary of changes since the manual was published.

The VTEDIT macro is not part of the standard distribution, but last I heard
was available from DECUS. If you want, I can send you a copy of a video
editing macro I wrote and use; it's a cousin of VTEDIT, but has no documenta-
tion beyond the help screens.

I just came back from a DEC V5 Tech Update course.

   - TECO manual is NOT in the V5 distribution

   - VTEDIT.TEC is also NOT in the V5 distribution

Are there copyright problems or could someone post VTEDIT.TEC? Seems like
lots of people (well, TECO hackers anyway) would like this.
