[comp.os.vms] Transferring Binary Files to non-VMS Systems

toshio@dhw68k.cts.com (George Toshio Suematsu) (07/30/88)

Hello,

I would like to transfer VMS binary file to a non-VMS system, then back
to another VMS system. For instance, I'd like to transfer a VMS object
file to a TOPS-20 system then to a second VMS system for linking purposes.
Or perhaps use 5.25 inch floppies in DOS formats to store the object,
carry the floppy to another site to load it onto another VAX.

I imagine I could convert the object to an ASCII format, store or transfer
it in the ASCII format, then convert it back. Can I use the CONVERT
utility for this? Perhaps put it in a BACKUP save set? I think I need
something like UUCODE/UUDECODE that considers the file type formats.

Thanks in advance,

Hello again,

Thanks for the responses to the above article. One suggestion was to use
KERMIT. I tried this originally, but KERMIT seems to modify the format of
VMS objects so the linker doesn't understand it. A second suggestion was
a $50.00 program; I prefer a good PD program.

A few days after I posted the above article, a program called MFTU was
posted to comp.os.vms. I downloaded the message, built the program, and
tested it on a 22 block object file in about 25 minutes. It works great.

George
