VMS NEWS -------- For the last three years I have been working on the support of the USENET NEWS functionality within VMS. [This program suite, VMS NEWS, implements full news functionality on native mode VMS, including a screen-based news reader, an integrated news poster, and supporting links into various VMS utilities including the mailer and the print job controller. The package also includes full support for the NNTP protocols, over either DECnet or TCP/IP, to allow NNTP connectivity to other VMS or Unix (tm) sites. The program can be used in conjunction with connectivity packages such as PMDF, TCP/IP or similar to allow a VMS node to be a fully functional network routing member of the USENET News network.] Up to today, the program has distributed in a number of ways, including DECUS VAX SIG tapes, PSI network connections, a tape copy service from the Australian National University, and also distributed by those who have already obtained a copy (VMS News is free-license software, and re-distribution is permitted). The purpose of this posting is twofold: 1 - To announce a new release of the software, V5.4, dated 4th August. This version supports broadcast trapping, up/down item text display scrolling, full print command support and numerous bug fixes (including a long awaited update of the on-line HELP file!). 2 - I am resigning from my position at the Australian National University today, and the Australian National University will no longer directly distribute the software tapes, nor will any further development on VMS NEWS be done at the ANU. PLEASE do not send any further cheques to the ANU for a tape copy of NEWS: those people who have cheques that are already in the mail will get a tape copy. .. NEWS V5.4 is available on PSI (using PSI_COPY) from the dte (505)262440032 .. NEWS V5.4 will be submitted to the US DECUS VAX SIG library tape for inclusion in the Fall 88 collection. If I have the opportunity in my new job to continue with work on this program, then I certainly will (and if this is possible, then I will notify this newsgroup of the distribution arrangements of any new releases). My thanks to those of you who have responded with bug reports and helpful suggestions for the program, and if possible I will return to this newsgroup with a new net address. -- Geoff Huston As of 5:00 today: EX-Computer Services Centre, Australian National University GPO Box 4, Canberra, ACT 2601 AUSTRALIA I will continue to pick up mail from the addresses below for a short time: ACSnet,CSNET: gih900@csc3.anu.oz PSI_MAIL: PSI%505262440032::gih900 INTERNET: gih900%csc3.anu.oz@uunet.uu.net UUCP: {uunet,ubc-cs,nttlab,mcvax,ukc}!munnari!csc3.anu.oz!gih900
