[net.news.group] Proposal: net.micro.7300

mark@cbosgd.UUCP (Mark Horton) (04/30/85)

Creating a group for this machine is a good idea, and I second the notion.
Calling it net.micro.7300 is a bad idea, however.

The machine was indeed internally known as the Safari 4 (not the Safari,
that's a whole series, for example the 6300 was the Safari 3.) The
advance publicity and all the internal information strongly suggested
that it was going to be called the 7300. However, just before the
announcement the name was changed to the "UNIX PC". The name 7300 won't
be around for long at all.

So what do we call it? Can't call it net.micro.pc, that name is taken
(I always thought it was a bad idea to call the IBM PC group net.micro.pc,
and of course that would be an equally bad name for a UNIX PC group.)
net.micro.unix is probably a bad idea too. Perhaps net.micro.att,
although such a group would have to share traffic about the other AT&T
micros, such as the 3B2. (I might guess that net.micro.pc would be a
better place for the 6300, since it's an IBM PC compatible.) Commodore
and Atari share one newsgroup for all their different machines, and it
doesn't seem to have caused any problems. Apple has 3 newsgroups right
now, which is enough to cause confusion (and lots of multiple postings.)

Given the level of traffic I've seen so far on the worldwide net
about AT&T hardware, I suspect net.micro.att will work out well, so
I propose that name.

i vote for the creation of the newsgroup net.micro.att

i agree with mark. that is a better and more lasting name
even if does include all of AT&T's machines.
