[comp.os.vms] need info about electrostatic plotters

dxxb@beta.lanl.gov (David W. Barts) (01/26/89)

We are considering purchasing an electrostatic plotter in the near
future. I am interested in hearing any comments about experiences
(both good and bad) with various models or manufacturers. Some things we
would like are:

	HP-GL compatibility
	400 DPI resolution
Ability to perform rasterization independant of host
42" bed width (36" is acceptable, however)
Accept data at 19200 baud or greater
	40 Mb raster storage capacity
Support for multiple hosts via a mux *
Low-resolution 200 DPI mode for quick plots *
	.5 inch/sec @400 DPI, 1 ips @200 DPI throughput
	Automatic paper cutter *
Plot on both mylar and vellum
	Complete documentation of all features
Operate on a VAX/VMS system via a PRINT queue.

* This would be nice, but it's not critical.

CalComp plot format is acceptable, but in this case it *must* be capable
of plotting a Calma DDM/Dimension III CalComp 951 data stream at a
minimum speed of 19200 baud. (Data is in the 906/907 command set, with
no checksum, a double SYNC of 1F hex, an EOB of 0D hex, and XON/XOFF
handshaking.) HPGL is *definitely* preferred as it will enable us to send data
from differing CAD packages without having to postprocess it or reset
the plotter.

Please respond directly to me and I will summarize to the net.
