[net.dcom] bit error rate tester recommendation wanted

phil@amdcad.UUCP (Phil Ngai) (11/15/85)

I am going to buy a bit error rate tester and would like recommendations
on what to get. I intend to use it mainly to verify our 56Kb DDS lines
and any subchannel or tail circuits which may be associated with it.

The best unit I have found is the HP 4925B. It accepts external clock
up to 72Kb and can generate clock at speeds up to and including 19200.
This latter capability is important for testing tail circuits connected
to DDS as DDS normally provides the clock.

This unit performs bit error testing, block error testing, error seconds,
and percentage error free second testing simultaneously. It can talk
RS232 or V.35.

So far, I haven't seen anything else with all these features, particularly
in a hand held unit. Are there any other testers I should look at? Is
there anything wrong with the 4925B? Any comments will be appreciated.

Phil,
s also around 10k, but very reliable and works at least up to 20 Mbps, which is the highest speed of anything we have. Good Luck in your search.
