[comp.os.vms] VWS / DECWindows

What is involved with switching from VWS to DECWindows on a VAXStation
3100? Is VWS supplied with VMS? I'm running DECWindows, but just
found out that an application that we're buying runs only under VWS.

You would get a better response if you contact your nearest DIGITAL customer
support center.

VWS isn't supplied with VMS -- DECwindows is. But you can have them both on the
same workstation. Here's how, roughly:

--	Install VMS and DECwindows. Tune the system according to the
documented recommendations, and save a copy of SYS$SYSTEM:VAXVMSSYS.PAR
	in SYS$SYSTEM:VAXVMSSYS.DECWINDOWS.
--	Install VWS. Tune the system etc., and save a copy of
	SYS$SYSTEM:VAXVMSSYS.PAR in SYS$SYSTEM:VAXVMSSYS.VWS.
--	The most crucial SYSGEN parameter is WINDOW_SYSTEM, whose value (use
	HELP in SYSGEN) is

		0	No window system
		1	DECwindows
		2	VWS

To change window systems, copy or rename the appropriate parameter file to be
SYS$SYSTEM:VAXVMSSYS.PAR, and reboot.

Both VWS and DecWindows are layered products. Currently, to switch
from VWS to DecWindows requires a re-boot. This may change for VMS 5.2.

I've read that you have to reboot, there is no way to do
both VWS and X at the same time.

I believe that from DECwindows to VWS it doesn't need a reboot,
however, consider the performance side of the thing. I would suggest
you keep two different system parameter files (VAXVMSSYS.PAR), one
for DECwindows, one for VWS. And reboot between the two.
Those two windowing systems really impact differently the system resource.
