[comp.os.vms] X Terminals or Workstations

dsamperi@marob.masa.com (Dominick Samperi) (01/19/90)

I saw some impressive illustrations of the power of workstations like
the DEC 3100 at the recent conference on X Windows at MIT (I was
particularly impressed by the smooth scrolling of complex color windows
within other windows). Several speakers at the conference expressed the
opinion that moderately complex X applications should be run on a
workstation in the 5 MIPS range, minimum (making a Sun 3/60 too slow,
for example). I saw no X terminals at the conference.

Is this 5 MIPS minimum necessary on the server end? Which X terminals
provide servers with this power? More generally, would people comment
on their experiences with X terminals from various vendors? Another
interesting topic is just what are the advantages of a workstation over
an X terminal (connected to a powerful server). This latter question
seems "obvious" until you think about it for a while.
