Need Information regarding VMS 4.6 Upgrade. I have received VMS 4.7 from DEC Software Services however, they forgot to send VMS 4.6 Having complete confidence in DEC, I waited for them to send 4.6 until it was to late. Now, my sales rep says they have 'archived' 4.6 and I can only get pieces instead of the entire kit. They have been kind enough to xerox the 4.6 release notes, and field service has given me two tapes. 4.6 and mandatory update. Fine. I installed them both on a 8700 (new) and wanted to make a standalone backup on the ra81 disk. The upgrade says to refer to 'Guide to Software Installation' I did and low and behold, my VMS 4.4 G.t.S.I. does not have any info about an 8700. Question: Did 4.6 include new manuals or updates to manuals as I suspect it did? Has anyone heard of VMS being archived and undistributable to a customer? I am about fed up with the whole deal. Any suggestions ? Thank You, Scott J. Allen Scott@GUVAX

We ran into the '4.6 is archived' problem, too...we had a major snafu with our software service contract, and by the time it got worked out, 4.6 was no longer available from Software Distribution. Our software service rep made a copy of the 4.6 tapes for us, and a sister site is sending a xerox of the release notes. I agree that DEC archived 4.6 entirely too soon! (Are you listening, DEC?) Building standalone backup on an RA81 is the same for all VAXen. Just use STABACKIT.COM: @SYS$UPDATE:STABACKIT device [root] 'device' is the device name of the disk (e.g. DUA0) 'root' is the name of the system root (e.g. [SYSE]) to use Note that if you don't specify the root, STABACKIT will use SYSE if you're building S/A backup on the system disk, and sys0 otherwise. (At least that's what I remember it doing...I always specify [SYSE].) ------ Ed Thierbach VAX System Manager Roy F. Weston, Inc. thierbac@umbc3.umd.edu
