[net.dcom] Question About Ethernet/ATT Starlan

jackson@ttidcb.UUCP (Dick Jackson) (12/19/85)

AT&T's Starlan employs Ethernet/802.3 control procedures but uses twisted
pair as the transmission medium. Does anyone know how the physical
interface is done? E.g. suppose you have a Lance Ethernet chip which
normally would talk to an Ethernet transceiver, how would you connect it
to the twisted pair?

Thanks in advance for answers,

Appreciatively, Dick Jackson.

Starlan is going to become part of the IEEE802 Spec. Many implementations
will use the Intel 82588 Chip (a sibling to the 82586). The chip uses
the systems DMA to send and recv data to the chip. The chip has serial
input and output lines running at up to 2 MBits/sec.

Call your local Intel rep and ask for info on the chip. The Intel Book
"Local Area Networking (LAN) Components User's Manual 1985" has a lot
of good info.
