[comp.os.vms] Proper way to write an ANSI labeled tape under VMS

klr@hadron.COM (Kurt L. Reisler) (12/06/90)

This UNIX person needs help from you VMS experts out there. I am trying
to create a ANSI labeled tape, to be read by a UNIX system. I have
managed with partial success, but let me describe what I am trying to
do.

I have a series of files in a subdirectory tree under DUA0:[neat.stuff].
I would like to place the contents of all the subdirectories onto an
ANSI labeled tape, and retain the directory hierarchies.

Can one of you tell me what the commands would be? I have had partial
success with:

$INITIALIZE MT0: TAPE
$MOUNT/HDR3/DENSITY=6250/BLOCKSIZE=1024 MT0:
$COPY [.dir1]*.*, [.dir2]*.*, ....other subdirectories.... MT0:
$DISMOUNT MT0:

It worked, somewhat. The files were written with double EOF between
each of them (is that normal?) and all of the subdirectory information was
lost. Also, the density and blocksize parameters seem to have been
ignores, as I managed to fill the entire tape, when it should not have.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
