Does anyone know how to get a Vadic 3451 to call another modem with Bell 212A versus VA3400? They're both 1200 baud, so the baud rate can't be used as a switch. It seems that it normally tries to connect with 3451; if the other modem is a 212A, it has problems starting up. We'd like to be able to use either, as we have lower transmission rates with 3451, but 212A is more popular. -- Ken Turkowski @ CIMLINC, Menlo Park, CA UUCP: {amd, decwrl, hplabs, seismo, spar}!turtlevax!ken ARPA: turtlevax!ken@DECWRL.DEC.COM

It alternates between the two until it sees something it understands. This sounds a bit dubious but seems to work all right in practice. For a couple of years most of utzoo's links to the outside world worked that way (3451PAs calling sites with 212-only modems). (I speak in past tense because we're running 2400PAs now.) Are you sure you're allowing enough time for the connection to complete? The alternation can be a bit slow, and I believe it tries VA3400 first, so a fast timeout could explain the problem. We once had trouble with this on Long Distance calls, where the completion of the connection took a noticeable amount of time, until we added a couple of 'k's on the end of the phone number to make the thing a little more patient. -- Henry Spencer @ U of Toronto Zoology {allegra,ihnp4,linus,decvax}!utzoo!henry
