[comp.os.vms] Need to connect remote sites

aiko@orchid.cs.odu.edu (John K Hayes) (05/31/91)

Hi, folks. We are contemplating connecting several remote sites to our
host MicroVAX 3800. There would be several (possibly up to 10 or 15) users
at each site, probably using PCs. There will be only three sites. Right
now the host has two maxed out CXA16-AA boards which are being used up by
about 30 users here locally. My question is what would be the best strategy
to accomplish this?

We have considered swapping out the CXA16s for a terminal server off of
which we could hang (supposedly) up to 128 ports. Right now we have 32 ports
from the CXA16s and 8 more from a CXY08 board. This may work fine, but it
may also be necessary to put a similar terminal server (a friend calls them
a mux) at each remote site and connect all users at that site to the remote
server which would be connect via one phone line to, I guess, one port on
the host side??? My friend says I will need a MUXserver at the host and
a DECmux at each remote site. Anyone know how these work?

The system has 48M of RAM and would be expected to host 4 major applications
(accounting and production database). Do you think this amount of memory
would be insufficient? Also, the 3800 is rated to support 76 users and runs
at 3.8 VUPs (DECs virtual units of performance). I think this should be fine
as we would expect no more than about 65 users total. This will be a
standalone system, no clustering. Is that a plausible load for this system?

Thanks,
  John
