[unix-pc.general] Questions about the 3B1

alden@osupyr.UUCP (06/22/87)

Hello,
I am looking into getting a 3B1 for our explorer post. We would like
to use it for netnews, a bboard, and handling mailing labels for our
council. Now for the questions:

  1) Approximately how much disk space does the "core" package of
unix take up? We are also interested in obtaining C, vi,
      and any other "programming utilities".

  2) How many ports are there on the 3B1? And, if you can have 3-4
users on the machine, does anyone have any experience as to how
slow the machine is. Also, all of our users will be dialing in,
so hopefully that will help the system out some.

  3) What is the maximum memory configuration from AT&T? (We decided
it wouldn't look good if all of the hardware wasn't AT&T since
they are our sponsor organization. :-)

  4) Does anyone have any experience with any of the DBMS's available
for the 3B1? The type of "reports" we will need to generate are
mailing labels based on zip-code, school, etc. We're going to
have to write a "real nice" user interface, so we are tending
towards a database with a built in language, but we'd be willing
to write it in C if the database is extra special. :-)

  5) Does anyone have any experience with any bboard programs? I have
UNaXcess and it looks pretty complete so we'll probably just go
with that unless anyone else has a better suggestion.

Any and All comments are greatly appreciated.
